You may and can modify Real Answer’s windows and menus by using ResEdit which is available from the Apple Programmers and Developers Association (APDA) at (800) 282-2732. Make a copy of Real Answer before modifying it, in case ResEdit accidentally damages it, and so you will have an unmodified copy to give others later. The most likely reasons to modify Real Answer are to add or change the key equivalents to menu items (e.g. some people may want to change “⌘R”, the command-key for running the equation solver, to “⌘=”) and to adjust the opening sizes and positions of windows. That last feature will be particularly tempting for those of you who have large screens.
If you do modify anything in Real Answer, do not distribute the modified copies. One would not want to give a program modified to generate large windows to the owner of a small-screen Mac, for example.
Another way of changing the command-key assignments is to use QuicKeys™, a program that allows users to define or redefine keyboard shortcuts for a wide variety of standard user-interface activities in just about any Macintosh application. “QuicKeys” is a trademark of CE Software. Ordering info about QuicKeys is available from (800) 523-7638.
If you need to reduce the amount of disk space Real Answer consumes, you can remove these help files with ResEdit; they are TEXT resources with IDs between 500 and 599. You can reduce the file size by about 35K by doing that. (Usually only people who are trying to run Real Answer without a hard disk would need to do that.) Under no circumstances may you then distribute the resulting truncated file; novice users would be frustrated by the lack of instructions.
You may not in any event modify or remove Chris Forden’s and Josephine San’s copyright, trademark, and other legal notices, ARSoftware’s name and address, the shareware fee request, or in any way obstruct their rights to distribute and obtain reimbursement from this product. You may not distribute damaged or modified copies of Real Answer.
